Day 7, The Ultimate Canadian Tire

May 19, 2008

Alright, so this is about the Canadian Tires here in Vancouver. If you have ever being to Toronto, corner of Bay and Dundas, you would have found a bright store, with lots of space and high ceilings. To somebody living in Toronto, that would be the norm for a Canadian Tire. In Vancouver, however, that doesn’t seem to be the case.

The store that I went to yesterday, on the corner of Gladstone and Kingsway, that was a disaster! The store is tiny, with all the items tightly crammed on the shelves next to each other and no clear visible indication of how to find anything. Inside the store is dark and unwelcoming. Finally, to my amusement, I found the battery shelves to be locked for the same reason that customer services asked me to surrender my backpack – exit scanners are just too old.

I guess that is not such a bad thing – there are plenty of other stores across the country and across the world with a far worse environment, but now I am completely not surprised why some people recruiting for the Canadian Tire at our University seemed so dull. After all, if you are named “Canadian” Tire, shouldn’t you be the example to how Canadian business is done in everything – customer support, stores, supply chains … all of it?
